Approximately 50 to 71% of adolescents who develop a substance abuse problem, have a co-occurring mental health issue.  This presentation will address the growing body of knowledge of this relationship and the role that mental illness and addiction (chemical & behavioral) have with one another.   Dr. Tuell will discuss the CUBIS Model of Addiction and examine the complex relationship of co-occurring disorders, and the role that the addictive brain has in this process.  A treatment template will be discussed to address these co-occurring disorders, as well as case studies to assist the attendee in his or her understanding of mental illness and the role of the addictive brain.
