Child Welfare Workers are frequently challenged by a client’s lack of motivation to change negative behaviors, which have contributed to safety issues or risk of maltreatment of their children. This is particularly true in the case of individuals who are struggling with substance use disorders.  Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based counseling style which adopts a brief intervention format, using critical elements that serve as catalysts for motivation and change. Motivation Interviewing addresses how to strengthen client intrinsic motivation to change and reduce ambivalence. This workshop serves as an introduction to Motivational Interviewing and gives participants the basic tools necessary to incorporate this intervention into their practice.
