This course will provide a historical, legal, and structural background of how our education system was created, and about why it is still so segregated by race, with children in the child welfare system, with disabilities, and by race have such unequal outcomes. This course will provide an overview of implicit bias and how that impacts the education system, as well as how trauma experienced by systems involved youth impacts their learning. Participants will then review how children of color and children with disabilities are over represented in the child welfare system; how children of color and those involved in the child welfare system are overrepresented in the special education system and in school discipline.
