Keeping Siblings Together: The Dahlke Family’s Adoption Day Celebration

On Hamilton County’s National Adoption Day, the Dahlke family stood before the judge, surrounded by smiles, tiny outfits carefully chosen for the occasion, and a community eager to celebrate. It was a moment more than a year in the making—a moment rooted in love, commitment, and a promise they made long before the hearing began.

When Austyn entered the world, she also entered foster care. At just four days old, the Dahlkes met her in the NICU; two weeks later, she was home in their arms. For her entire 17 months of life, they have been her safe place—her family. But Austyn wasn’t their first foster child. In April 2024, the Dahlkes welcomed her biological brother, Caleb, into their home forever through adoption.

For them, the decision to adopt again wasn’t difficult. “It is important to us to keep biological siblings together,” they shared. When they learned Austyn had been born, they knew their hearts—and their home—were meant for her too.

The Joy and Journey of Sibling Connection

The most rewarding part of their adoption experience has been watching Caleb and Austyn grow up side by side. Their bond, already strong and full of curiosity, is a daily reminder of why the Dahlkes said yes—not once, but twice.

Keeping siblings together brings stability and connection that can last a lifetime. For the Dahlkes, being able to offer that gift has been one of the greatest joys of their foster care journey.

The Hard Choices Behind the Beautiful Moments

As any caregiver knows, the path to adoption includes many layers: appointments, paperwork, sleepless nights, and decisions that weigh heavily on the heart. The Dahlkes shared that one of the hardest lessons they’ve learned is how difficult—and necessary—it can be to say no to certain placements.

“I wish someone would have told me how hard it is to say no to potential placements but how necessary it is to hold a spot for those possible future siblings.”

This wisdom reflects so many foster parents’ reality: every decision is made with love, but sometimes love means protecting space for the family you hope to build.

A Message for Families Considering Adoption

The Dahlkes offer a simple but powerful message to caregivers thinking about adoption:
“Our kids are a true blessing to our family. They are worth every appointment, every extra piece of paperwork, and every sleepless night.”

Their story is one of devotion, resilience, and the belief that every child deserves to grow up with the people who were meant to walk life’s journey with them.

As Austyn’s adoption became official on National Adoption Day, the Dahlkes didn’t just celebrate a legal milestone—they celebrated the beautiful gift of keeping siblings together, and the beginning of a new chapter for a family already full of love.
